Jacqueline van Maarsen (‘Jopie’) became Anne Frank’s intimate friend when they attended the Jewish high school together, the school where the German occupants forced all Jewish
children to go to. ‘Dear Jacqueline, I hope that we’ll stay “best” friends until we meet again’, Anne Frank wrote in her farewell letter to Jacqueline from the place she had
gone into hiding. But fate decreed otherwise. Anne Frank perished in the concentration
camp of Bergen-Belsen, whereas during the war some remarkable events saved Jacqueline’s life. Van Maarsen is now to pay a visit to Budapest, to share her personal
memories with us. The partner organisations of the event include the Anne Frank Stichting in the Netherlands and the Budapest Holocaust Memorial Centre.

The presentation of Jacqueline van Maarsen`s book entitled My Friend, Anne Frank takes place at Merlin Theatre (excerpts to be read out by Annamária Láng, and the author, after her lecture, talks with historian Andrea Pető), while Bálint Jewish Community Centre, besides the book presentation, hosts a photo exhibition depicting the relationship between her and Anne Frank, open from 19 November on.
