Conference on Hungary and the Low Countries
The Chair of Dutch Studies at the University of Debrecen organizes a scientific conference entitled "The relations between Hungary and the Low Countries". During the course of history, several contact points developed among these countries (Holland, Belgium, Hungary) in the fields of culture, literature, and politics. There was a time when the politics of great powers shaped the course of events in a way that the history of these countries linked up via a single person, as it was the case with Maria of Habsburg in the 16th century. In 1956, Hungarians got into focus as masses of refugees after a suppressed revolution. The role of the Protestant churches increased significantly after the lost battle of Mohács against the Turks, and continued to be on the rise during the course of the following centuries as well. The peregrination of the 16th-18th centuries, the 1676 rescue of the Hungarian galley-slaves in Naples by Michiel de Ruyter, and the “children`s trains” after the First World War are episodes of this kind. The conference is to focus closely on the literary relations, the contact points that had their influence via the Hungarian or Dutch translation of certain works, but the history of a literary work, personal relationships and mutual influence on one another also fall into this category.
