Holland Tsunami Drowning in Europe
The Dutch premiére will be on 13th November 2008 at Theatre Bellevue, Amsterdam.
"We are facing an unprecedented crisis in Europe. Within a month`s time we have to evacuate 16 million people. This means more than 170.00 per day. Only one country, the Republic of Hungary is willing to host the Dutch refugees, especially for the reason that there is practically no chance that they will ever return to their homeland" Quoted from: (weblog) www.dangerzone.nl
"They are coming, and they are already in the pantry, this time not the Russians but the Dutch. They might be bringing weed instead of communism, which will enable us to bear this extra burden of 16 million people. We may put them up in the unused Soviet barracks, the rundown prefab blocks that we are left with. And they will build proper homes and clean yards in return, for our gesture of letting them in, and let us not forget the Protestant ethics and order! We Hungarians have to grab this chance!" SPACE Theatre was founded by Petra Ardai and Luc van Loo. They managed to establish international reputation with their perfromance entitled Where We Belong. SPACE is testing the borderline between reality and theatre in terms of forms and themes, steps beyond the usual theatrical frames, and turns the audience into active players. SPACE does documentary theatre that dissects. They approach social issues, turn the world upside down, and leave the earthly world of politics via personal matters. They address sensitive issues, taboos, reveal the reality hiding behind facts, protocol, and slogans. The experimental preformances of SPACE are interdisciplinary - visuals, sound, lines and motion are dramaturgical elements of the same rank. By placing various media next to one another they are able to let us see different levels of meaning simultaneously. The key issue of every performance is identity, and the question what determines what I am and what I think.
Holland Tsunami is a theatrical mockumentary. What would happen if a tsunami flooded the Netherlands and Hungary was the only country to host the refugees? What would happen if all of the Dutch were evacuated, and they had to build up their new lives in Hungary?
With the Dutch finding themselves in a dependent situation, the roles are swapped.
Can the Dutch realize that they have to leave their homes and valuables, and everything they got used to behind? To what extent are they able to integrate into the everydays in Hungary? What will the Hungarians say upon the arrival of the liberal and demanding Dutch? Is Hungary ready for this? Can the Hungarians take the advantage that the disaster offers? Can they show hospitality? Can they gain more respect in Europe by this?
The audience may have an insight into today`s reality in the Netherlands, via video interviews, for instance. An overall view is provided on how the Dutch see Hungarian people, the European Union, and the new member states. The performance reveals the human problems and fictious fates that are related to the story. The audience is thus involved in the human tale based on reality.
What does it mean to be an immigrant? To what extent does national identity determine you? What to give up while trying to toe the line? What to give up while trying to accept others? What is that cannot be given up?
Via the mock disaster scenario, SPACE sheds light at the characteristics of the two countries. Holland Tsunami is an attempt to map up national identity and the fear of losing it. The performance illuminates the image problems of the countries of “New Europe” and the conceitedness of the West, all in a subtle and poetic manner. Complex social policy reduced to human scale. Holland Tsunami is neither a scientific study, nor a political pamphlet, but a feverish stream of thoughts with much self-irony.
