Finissage of Carla van de Puttelaar`s photo exhibition

The exhibition has selected recent works by Dutch photographer Carla van de Puttelaar on display. Carla van de Puttelaar graduated from the Amsterdam Rietveld Academie in 1996, and soon became a key figure in contemporary Dutch photography.
Her works attracted interest on an international level as well, she was invited to the Maison de la Photographie in Paris on several occasions, and her pictures were highlighted pieces of the prestigious exhibition of  l`Esprit du Nord.
Puttelaar`s works are known and appreciated in several countries, from Tokyo to New York and Zurich to Madrid. Her pictures regularly show up in galleries and at art fairs, but also in significant collections.

Her interest is directed at the female body, at characteristics of the female identity that may be expected to attract interest already for the viewpoint. Pictures composed on blue and pink colours, female bodies. A wrinkled bedsheet, an uncertain movement, laxity, the bruises still visible on the thighs, and all this is still above the profane world of everyday life.
Carla van de Puttelaar knows something about the relationship between women and the female body that she can express in the form of a picture very precisely. She does not want to involve the viewer, only wants to show something rarely seen. On the other hand, you cannot help recognising the influence of the tradition that was elaborated by the Netherlandish and Dutch portrait painters. This quiet contemplation, showing something through a layer of insignificance, and perhaps even the colours, evoke Vermeer`s pictures.

The exhibition is to close on 10 October, 2008. On the occasion of the finissage, Nessim Gallery will welcome Carla van de Puttelaar and Esther Woerdehoff, representing the Paris Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, the partner institute of Nessim Gallery.

"The ASKO Ensemble, conducted by Hans Leenders, created a living connection with the oeuvre and if it was the only benefit of LOW Festival, we could already be grateful"
