Wunderbaum Magna Plaza - Budapest Autumn Festival
The company is one of the most important representatives of sitespecific theatre, a trend much stressed in the Netherlands. The company was founded in 2001, and has been operating in Rotterdam and Gent, with five actors and a designer. Their collective performances are based on their own scripts displaying the authors` sensitiveness to social issues. Magna Plaza, performed at a shopping mall, is about consumption, the genuineness of emotions, and the correlation between appearance and reality. The stories were inspired by the film entitled Dolls by Takeshi Kitano, while the opt for the venue reflects an undertaken co-existence with mass and pop culture. The artists boldly use cultural gadgets, icons, even banalities, all shown in a fake mirror. The performance is not
intended to criticize consumer society radically, but to encourage the audience to live it with more awareness. The play blends with the environment of the mall, and besides the ‘real’ audience the visitors to the mall will become spontaneous participants (‘players’ and spectators at the same time). Wunderbaum’s Magna Plaza is a part of the PLACCC2008 International Site-specific Programmes.
